Daddy Duty

Sleep, Eat, Diaper Change. Repeat.

Does your baby sleep through the night?

on January 14, 2012

We get this question a lot and I wanted to address it as I know everyone is well meaning, but we sometimes feel as if he and we’re being judged since he’s not. As new parents, you’re self conscious about everything you do to ensure you’re doing things “right.” The fact of the matter is that at a little over a month old now, JJ shouldn’t be sleeping through the night. His stomach is about the size of a marble. Once he eats, he fills it up and digests it quite quickly, usually in only an hour or two as it’s all liquid. Breast milk is processed even faster than formula since it’s more natural meaning more frequent feeding and diaper changes.

You and I are able to sleep through the night because our stomachs are larger and we can store the food and energy to be digested. JJ will get there, but not yet.  He’s still a little guy. If he slept through the night we’d be worried.

Now, the truth of our situation is that the first few weeks were downright miserable.  My wife and I were truly zombie-like as JJ was up every hour and I do mean every hour with no breaks. My wife was a champion and powered through to continue breastfeeding despite this crazy schedule.  I would’ve probably caved and reached for the bottle if it wasn’t for her. As mentioned above, formula is harder for his little stomach to digest compared to breast milk so he’d sleepy (marginally) longer.

That said, our first “long” night was January 6, 2012 at a month and 3 days old where he slept 4 hours. Claire was awake literally awake in the middle of the night waiting to feed him. This level of sleeping isn’t his routine yet, but it’s nice when it happens.
